[Distutils] Paste broken? (likely setuptools installation problem)

Ouch.  That sounds like a nasty problem.  I'll see if I can figure out how 
it's happening.  The conflict detection code currently sucks rather badly, 
I'm afraid, so maybe this will provide a good excuse to do some 
refactoring.  :)
