forgot to add this: in general, Oracle 8i versions prior to 8.1.7 suck, so
in general I would strongly suggest that you upgrade (I know, I know, it's
not just a matter of "uppgrading when every new release comes out", but if
you can upgrade, do it).

We run Oracle 8.1.6 and 8.1.7 on Solaris and 8.1.7, and 8.1.7.
